Un dittico "Longobardo"

Il dittico del console Boezio (Roma, 487), padre del filosofo Severino Boezio, è conservato a Brescia nel monastero di Santa Giulia, fondato dal re Desiderio e dalla regina Ansa. Oltre che notevole esempio di dittico consolare d’avorio, il cimelio è importante per la scritta e per i due dipinti che appaiono al suo interno. È qui offerta la prima lettura completa del testo iscritto, il quale risulta essere una preghiera che raccomanda a Dio i vescovi cattolici e un gruppo di fedeli dai nomi germanici, probabilmente longobardi. La presenza di sant’Agostino fra i tre santi dipinti accredita la coincidenza con la traslazione delle reliquie del santo a Pavia. I due dipinti si dimostrano così frutto della committenza di membri della corte longobarda al tempo di Liutprando.
